Paul Adams
Paul Adams' journey was built on talent, resilience and an unorthodox action. Now, he's building pathways so the next generation can follow their dreams.
Rooted on the Cape Flats
Paul Adams was born and raised in Grassy Park, Cape Town. Growing up on the Cape Flats, access to world-class coaching, manicured cricket ovals and top-tier equipment was non-existent. Like many young kids in the community, his first cricket fields were street corners and concrete schoolyards.
Despite the lack of resources, Paul developed a highly unique bowling action. A left-arm wrist-spinner whose head twisted away from the batsman at the moment of release, his action was both mesmerizing and highly effective. In 1995, at just 18 years old, he was called up to make his Test debut for South Africa.
Standing for Equality
Being one of the few prominent players of color in post-apartheid South African cricket, Paul carried both the hopes of his community and the systemic challenges of a transforming sport. His international career spanned 9 years, during which he took over 100 Test wickets.
Years after his retirement, Paul stood up at Cricket South Africa's Social Justice and Nation Building (SJN) hearings. He testified openly about the discrimination and isolation he faced during his playing days, paving the way for crucial systemic changes, greater representation and equal treatment for all cricketers.
Giving Back to Cricket
Upon retiring from playing, Paul transitioned to coaching, bringing his sharp tactical mind and deep experience to domestic franchise cricket, where he won 5 trophies as a head coach. He has also served as South Africa U19 bowling coach and currently holds the position of High Performance Spin Bowling Lead at Cricket South Africa (CSA).
In December 2025, Paul launched the Paul Adams Foundation. Having experienced first-hand how sport can open doors to education, health and a career, the foundation is his direct vehicle to ensure that youth on the Cape Flats have access to the same life-changing opportunities.
